Creating a healthy morning routine can do absolute wonders for your mood and overall wellbeing as a mum. If you find that you get easily frustrated with the morning chaos and forget to make breakfast or brush someone’s teeth, then setting healthy rituals for your day can massively help you feel calm and happy with your mornings.
If you struggle with waking up or feel that you have zero time to create a morning routine then this article is for you, mama! At first it might seem overwhelming or a little scary to make changes, but in the long term it will help you to feel less anxious and more uplifted with your days.
Before diving into the main tips to help with a healthier morning, my ultimate tip is this:
Get up before the kids
This depends on the age of your child. If you have a newborn or young baby, then stay in bed until you truly feel ready to get up. Mums needs rest, whether breastfeeding or not, and if baby wakes regularly during the night, it is essential to look after yourself with plenty of rest.
If you got to bed at a reasonable hour and your little one sleeps all or most of the night, then start introducing an earlier get up time for yourself. This will do wonders for your mental health!
When you start the day on your terms you will set yourself up to feel healthier, happier, and more mindful to life. This is a great way to take care of your needs before spending the rest of the day seeing to others needs.
And if this tip is truly impossible, do the best you can, mama! That’s all we can do. Either way follow the tips below to get your day off to a healthy start.
1. Lemon Water
Add the juice of one lemon to one litre of water and drink throughout the morning. Lemon water will help to hydrate your body after many hours of no water during sleep. It will help to boost energy, promote good digestion, and stop sugar cravings later in the day by keeping your body hydrated. Drink the lemon water whilst following the below tips.
2. Meditate
There are many ways to meditate, however as a busy mum, do a short guided mediation with an app or online video as it will help to keep it focused. Grab the earphones and phone or computer, and listen to a guided mediation for 10 to 15 minutes. This will help to calm your mind and body before the chaos begins.
3. Read/Audio
After the mediation listen to 10 to 30 minutes of an audiobook with a huge focus on personal development. Choosing books in this category will continue to help your mind stay positive and help you feel uplifted for your day. Side note: you can do this with or without your child. If they are awake just snuggle in bed together whilst listening to the book. This will also have a positive effect on your child as they will feel relaxed with mummy as mummy is relaxed!
4. Gratitude
This task can take one minute – which you do have time to do, mama! Every single morning, write a sentence or do a list of the things you are grateful for. Feel into this and see what comes to mind. This is an amazing tool for mental health and help with anxiety and depression. 4
5. Snuggle
I simple way to restore mental health!
During and after the mediation and listening to the audiobook, snuggle with your little one. This will have huge benefits for both mummy and kiddies, as it will help you to feel nourished, loved, happy, calm and grounded before the daily tasks begin.
6. Exercise
If your child is at home with you in the morning then the best way to get a workout in is to aim for a 15 to 45 minute workout. The time will vary on the age of your child and how long they can be entertained without having the full attention of you. Do a 15 minute HIIT bodyweight circuit, or 30-45 minutes of weight lifting, or 20 minutes yoga.
7. Greens
Get those greens in ladies! You don’t have to eat a big salad in the morning, that’s not realistic or generally appetising for most, so the best way is to add a scoop of greens powder to a glass of water and drink. Greens powders are packed with powdered fruits and vegetables which means they are a dense form of vitamins and minerals. They help with energy, digestion, skin health, and ensuring your body is provided with an abundance of nutrients to create optimal health.
8. Breakfast
Breakfast is one of the most important ways to start your day with a healthy bang! This is the perfect tool to help you feel energised, satiated, healthy, happy, and have good digestion. The key is to ensure you are eating a breakfast loaded with nutrients and calories to help you feel good for the morning. Keep it wholesome with wholefoods and you will feel balanced in mind and body which will prevent sugar cravings and binges later in the day. An example breakfast: add oats, chia seeds, flaxseeds and a plant-based protein powder to a bowl and mix with water until combined with a delicious thick consistency. Top with fresh fruit, coconut yoghurt and peanut butter. A perfect mix of protein, fats and carbohydrates to help your body thrive!
9. Skincare
And finally…take care of your body on the outside too! Before you head out into the day, take a little time to pamper your skin. This is a fantastic way to practice daily self care by nourishing your face with healthy products to hydrate your skin and help rid those dark circles under the eyes from those sleepless nights. Use facial products that are enriched with nutrients that help your skin thrive. Making time to nourish your skin every day will do wonders for your mental health, as well as your skin health!
How you start your morning has the power to transform your life. Getting a head start with positive mindset activities and nourishing your body with wholesome food, exercise and self care rituals can help you feel incredible, which will ultimately help you to be the mum you dream to be for yourself and family.
